An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
