Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Trade for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before redirecting customers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Worries

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users administering products of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the rising price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Response and Content Elimination

Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic material and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the service safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or administering at residence.

After minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The seller sent an guidebook and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Item Details and Pricing

Within these groups, messages display black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for the messaging service said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially serious health risks”.
